On the importance of engaging yourself

Happened to be talking to a few friends this afternoon. These people held positions in governement service and had retired a few years ago. After a few minutes of desultory conversation, we seemed to have run out of topics for discussion.

Further whatever we spoke was all about incidents from past. This set me thinking- how does one engage one's mind after retiring from the routine of many years where conversation was perhaps a time pass before one gathered oneself and went about one's regular business.

It seems to me that the ability to actively listen and take in data is the most important ability that is needed to be engaged in a conversation happily. Most, alas, have little skill, and seem to be interested only in having their say and then moving on.
